Uttam Mohanty (April 29, 1955 to February 27, 2025) was a legendary Indian film and television actor who dominated the Odia film industry, known as Ollywood, for three decades. Often hailed as a one-man industry, he amassed a prolific filmography of over 135 Odia films, alongside 30 Bengali films and the Hindi film Naya Zaher. Renowned for his effortless naturalism and urbane charisma, Mohanty broke away from the traditional Odia screen hero archetype, leaving an indelible mark on regional cinema.
Born and raised in Baripada, Odisha, Mohanty exhibited a strong passion for acting and sports during his youth. After completing his education in science at Maharaja Purnachandra College, he briefly pursued chartered accountancy in Ludhiana and Kolkata. However, his cinematic aspirations drew him back to Baripada when he learned of a local film production. Director Sadhu Meher cast him in the 1977 film Abhiman, which became a box office hit and formally launched Mohanty's acting career.
